Minner Expands Delaware Slots
A joint proposal from
Delaware’s Governor Ruth Ann Minner, Legislator, and casino
officials will permit Delaware’s three gambling parlors to house
more slot machines and stay open nearly around the clock. The
price casinos must pay for the benefits would be a fee between
$300-$1000 per machine, paid yearly to the state.
The state could see a
current budget increase of $2.3 million from the combination of
the new fees and the regular state share of the increased slots
proceeds. However, according to the Department of Finance, when
the 2007 fiscal year begins on July 1st, the budget
could receive an $11.4 million boost.
Supporters of
the proposal would like to launch legislation to put the plan into
effect as soon as possible. Specifics in the new legislation
include a mandate for the state to use $1 million of yearly slots
proceeds to benefit the treatment of gambling addicts.
Newark’s Rep. William A Oberle (R) says,
“The real money here is in the additional machines that will be
allowed and the additional hours.” Oberle backed the legislations
that legally placed slot machines in Delaware’s horse racing
tracks. Governor Minner was not in initial support of extending
casino hours; however her views changed as out-of-state
competition against her state’s 4th largest revenue
source began to gain momentum.
