Deadline on Pa.
Slots Applications
The Pennsylvania State Gaming
Control Board has issued an application deadline to fourteen
bidders seeking their slots casino license. Applications must be
submitted by January 4th of 2006.
The Gaming Control board will grant licenses to
five stand-alone slots parlors in locations throughout the state
of Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Two more
licenses will be issued to parlors within resorts. The remaining
seven are to be awarded to horse racing tracks.
Although the application deadline is closing, slots
licensing will not be immediate. The horse racing tracks are not
expecting to receive their license from the Gaming Control Board
until late in the summer. The other establishments will not
possess a license until sometime later than the racetracks.
Pennsylvania slots licensing is no longer a local
concern. Two out-of-state businesses have already expressed
interest in the Pittsburgh licensing alone. Isle of Capri Casino
Inc., of Biloxi, Mississippi, is planning a venture including the
National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Ohio’s Nationwide
Realty Investors. The huge casino project includes plans for a new
home for the NHL Team.
Isle of Capri’s president and CEO, Tim Hinkley,
expressed his company’s commitment to the process. “Last week we
announced our relationship with Lemieux Group and today we took
the next step in the application process. We look forward to
working closely with the Penguins as well as state and local
officials as the application process continues.” Hinkley seems
optimistic about the process.
National involvement does not cease with Isle of
Capri. Forest City Enterprises of Cleveland and Harrah’s
Entertainment of Las Vegas are involved in a joint effort
requiring a Pittsburgh stand-alone license. Detroit is thrown
into the mix through businessman Don Barden and Chester, West
Virginia finds inclusion through MTR Gaming.
