New Slots Millionaire
An 84-year-old slot machine
player makes Atlantic City history. While playing her luck on the
casino nickel slots she hits a $10 million jackpot. According to
the casino operators this marks the largest prize in the city’s
long gambling history.
Josephine Crawford is a
Pennsylvania resident. The Great-grandmother was a guest in
Harrah’s casino, playing her luck on the 5 cent slot machines. As
she played her final $5 credit on the Megabucks machines, the
slots game bursts into a show of lights and sound, broadcasting
that Crawford had won $10,010,113.48.
Christopher Jonic, casino
spokesperson, recalls the event, “There were a whole lot of bells
and whistles, and she had no idea, really, what had happened.”
Crawford received her check after
both the Harrah’s casino staff and International Gaming Technology
verified her victory. International Gaming Technology owns the
slot machines.
Crawford can receive her winnings
in one of two ways. She can either accept the increments of a
25-year annuity or take the lumps sum which will be reduced to
roughly $5.5 million after taxes are deducted.
Candid Crawford expresses her
thoughts on her winnings, “Somehow I’ll spend it. I’m just happy
I won it, for my family, although they don’t need it.”
Before Crawford, there has been
no Megabucks slot machine winner for three years. Megabucks draws
upon the hundreds of slot machines stationed in Atlantic City’s
twelve casinos. The grand prize is accumulated from a small
portion of each play.
Crawford has been playing slot
machines at the Harrah’s casino since 1980. The previous Atlantic
City win record was won in August 1994, for the amount of $8.54
million.
